Jalopnik reports: Report: Computer Servers 'as Bad for Climate as SUVs'. This has to be a bunch of hooey. While the always-on server is certainly an energy sucker, it doesn't have carbon emissions and, in a heartbeat, can switch over to solar, wind, etc.
Although, it is nice to have some competition in the pollution game. It's tough feeling like a shit most of the time.
Actually, if your electricity is created at a power plant that burns coal, your server does produce CO2 emissions.
And, as far as SUVs go, they are not efficient and they are not safe. Due to their size, they consume more material when they are built (metal, plastics, tires, etc,) consume more when they are used and are less mobile making the avoidance of a collision less likely. And, just because something is big doesn't mean its strong!

SUVs are more energy effecient than you think and isn't anyone worried about their family's safety. That should make you feel better!
