The Truth About Cars writes GM Death Watch 88: Almost Doesn’t Count. Robert Farago is far smarter than we are, so we won't comment on his continued insistence that GM is doomed. What we can comment on, however, is a memo he partially reprinted. The memo, from a GM big-wig saying that only GM products are to be parked in front:
As such, I am directing that ONLY GM products be parked on the roads around Design and in the parking area in front of our building. Any employees or suppliers/vendors who are not driving GM products may use the west and north parking lots.Lots of vehicle manufacturing plants are doing this around the country, so GM doing it is not really big news. But, as Mr. Farago writes, it's GM hiding from the competition.
You know what we'd do if we were GM? We'd buy a handful of Accords and Camrys and Sonatas (and others) and require every single person on the design team... strike that, all employees at GM's headquarters to spend time in the competitors cars. Then list* what they liked most. And list what the competition does better. To defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy. GM, get to know your enemy.
*Yes, they'd write it down and have to hand it in to their bosses.
They are. Unfortunately, after the designer develop the car, the accountants come in and start cutting this and this and this....
