Now just shy of $3 a gallon, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is closing in on the record high set last year in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
We thought gas prices went up last year because the oil companies were concerned about "refining capacity", but it's quite clear that's not the case. In unrelated news, the oil industry is happy to report that its "screwing capacity" is running at full capacity.
California drivers are feeling the biggest pricing pressures at the pump - especially in Barstow, where a station is charging $3.79 a gallon for regular gasoline, the highest price found in the country.
