We've often derided SUVs because they're big, stupid, wasteful, and unsafe. Well, technology has helped with the unsafe part. And we want to formally acknowledge that. Autoblog reports: Flipped off! 2006 SUV rollover resistance improves greatly, says NHTSA. For a long time we insisted (rightly so) that SUVs were simply not as safe as cars because of their penchant for rolling over. And while that hasn't been totally eliminated (an SUV's center of gravity is simple higher than that of a car), great strides have been made. And that's better for everyone. Even Alison agrees.
Looking at vehicle safety from a one-dimensional perspective might provide for great comment material, it is intrinsically limited by the inherent single dimension. There are numerous crashworthy categories where SUVs reign supreme over their much smaller, lighter and more easily crushed cousins. Not to mention the ability to cart around numerous kids, mama and all of the necessary gear for a weekend trip to the country and tow the boat all at the same time!
