We were pretty bummed when, for some reason, our local PBS station stopped carrying MotorWeek. But now that our TiVo is picking up the show again, we're wondering what we missed about it. Oh, sure, John Davis is personable and Pat Goss like to eat a lot of pies, but do these people ever really get critical of any cars? They like every frickin' car that is handed to them! Take this made-up excerpt for example:
The Hyundai Azera is an all-new model for 2006. It replaces the XG350 that would occasionally burst into flames. While most of our road testers didn't like this feature, Pat Goss said the high heat and open-flame nature of the fire browned the crust on his apple pies perfectly. This feature has been held over in the new Azera and we look forward to testing it again."See? MotorWeek even likes cars that burst into flames!
MotorWeek was never a slick show.
MY perception is that the original people were not media professionals so they sort of ambled along liking cars and constucting something like a tv show. And, since things were OK, they never changed much.
A high comfort level cottage industry. And there is nothing wrong with that. But it is unusual in television.
