"What the (profanity of choice)?" you say. "So, how did they make money?" Think loans. Ford has bags of money and is happy to give you a loan to buy one of their cars. Even if they are moving fewer and fewer of them.
So Ford managed a profit on the money-lending side of their business. We know GM makes a ton of dough from their GMAC financing division. Are we witnessing a trend here?
But back to Ford; now we're not rocket scientists... or bankers... or pants-wearers but we're pretty sure selling less cars is bad. Especially since you are loaning money to buy a product (cars) that you are managing to sell less of. Maybe it could work if Ford just turns into a bank.
"Thanks for opening your account. You get a choice of a 4-slice toaster or a Focus."
How could Americans buy japanese cars?. I'm asia-american, but i will never buy a Japanese car. I'm a citizen of this country, i'd always drive American cars...even they're crap.

How did they make money? They sell the number one truck in the United States, 432,969 in six months. That is twice the number of Camarys Toyota sells in six months. The F-150 is 90% of their business in one of the largest auto markets in the United States. That is how they make money.
