Our good friend Philip at About Cars has selected his Top 10 most fuel efficient cars. The interesting part is he didn't only go by EPA numbers -- he factored in usability. So, as cool as the Honda Insight is, it ain't on the list.
Our favorite from Philip's list:
Honda Accord
This car is just impossible to beat if you need/want a great family sedan. Under $24k will get you leather, automatic, solid room for four and over 33 miles per gallon on the highway. And you get the legendary Honda design and reliability.
Mini Cooper
Come on! This car is awesome. If we didn't have little ones to tote around we'd hop in the Mini Cooper and just go. Fun styling, superb handling, great gas mileage -- it's the whole package (albeit a small package).
Toyota Prius
Everyone's already sung the praises of the Prius so we won't go on. We demand a little better performance from our cars but we'd be tempted to get one if we thought it would catch the eye of hot hippie chick down the street. (Yeah, yeah, peace and harmony. Make love, not war?! Now you're talking sister!)
Malibu Maxx
Okay, after our romp with the hippie chick (see above) produces a litter of kiddies, we'd probably have to break down and get something bigger. Chevy might have hit the nail on the head with this model: affordable price, nicely-sized hatch and a very comfortable back seat. We sorta long to be eight years old again and have a DVD player and 47 cup holders at our disposal. "Mom!! Cup holder 31 is low on Poweraid... how am I supposed to watch The Best of Tim Russert?"
*Full disclosure: We write some of the short profiles for Philip. But even if we didn't, we'd still link to his list (and his site). This guy knows cars.
