GM's a funny company. No, I don't mean they tell a hell of a joke. It's more like this: In the past, Saab made hatchbacks. Big AND small hatchbacks. GM buys Saab. GM stomps Saab into hatchbacklessness. (Wait, it gets funnier.) GM makes the Malibu. It doesn't sell well. GM boots the Malibu and makes a new Malibu. One version of the Malibu is called the Malibu Maxx and it's a hatchback. So, GM buys Saab, kills off the Saab hatchbacking, builds a new Chevy (with an old name) and adds a hatch to it. Har! I mean, why would a hatch work with Chevy if it didn't work with Saab (who made hatches for years and years)?
Anyway, enough of GM as an MC. How's the car? Dammit, I like it. I like a Chevy. Okay, it's not a looker like Chrysler's 300C but as far as what a family really needs, the Maxx fits the bill. I haven't had a chance to get my sticky fingers in one yet but the fine folks at The Car Connection wrote a great review of the 2004 Malibu Maxx and even Anita Lienert wrote a positive article about the Malibu Maxx in The Detroit News.
2004 Malibu Maxx
And now GM will be making a Saab based on a Subaru. It's a hatchback. Maybe GM does tell a hell of a joke.
