So I see the 2004 Toyota Prius is out. There are now a total of two Priuses in my nabe. That brings the total up to three hybrids in this "neighborhood of liberalism" (Park Slope, Brooklyn). Yet I know of four Hummer H2s. Fuel Conservationists, Where Art Thou?
So what is the deal with hybrid cars? Right now there's just two companies making hybrids: Toyota and Honda. Honda has been pretty quiet on the matter (as far as talking about them to the news media) but Toyota has nothing but good things to say. And, in fact, Toyota and their luxury division, Lexus, are about to launch even more models with hybrid technology. While that is cool, it's not all that newsworthy since they've been talking about it for some time.
Here's what's interesting: VW doesn't like hybrids and isn't going to make one. And GM, Ford, etc. are sitting on the sidelines. Ford and GM have promised hybrids but keep pulling back. Now they don't seem at all interested in making hybrids at all. How can companies in the same industry have such different outlooks?
