Side Airbags Or DVD Player?
It's a tough'un. CNN reports: Car options: Value added, or not. OK, so they pick a bunch of options (safety equipment shouldn't be an option) and decide which are worth getting. We generally agree with the list, but we think the whole built-in DVD stuff is wicked cool and should be on the must have. It's hard to choke up the $2k for navigation when a decent external dealie is just $300.
What do you think is a must have and what's a waste of money?

It's amazing to me that car companies should give the choice of consumer safety as an option. I vote for the airbags over a CD player any day.

I have just bought a car which has been fitted with lcd screens in the headrests, however, the dvd player had been rmoved. What type of dvd player do I need to connect to the existing screens?

I opted for built in system, and as someone previously said, the sat nav system comes with host of additional extras such reversing camera, phone speed dial, touch screen access to standard features such as the radio. Integrated systems also match the layout and look of the interior.

The cost of factory nav systems are ridiculous. A factory nav for a Chrysler 300C costs $2400 if purchased from the parts department. It's a nice clean unit, but when you can go down to Circuit City and get a cool one for $400, I don't see why anyone would even bother ordering a car with the factory nav system.

I don't want a DVD player in my car. I don't have kids, and if I'm going to watch a movie, it's sure not going to be in my car. I like having a nice stereo too. Unless I'm on the phone, which I don't like to do while driving, my satellite radio is on. I'm not sure I could go without a decent sound system.
The nav system isn't a big deal to me. If you want an in-dash setup, they're so expensive, and the aftermarket ones are a better deal. But unless you frequently drive to places you've never been, the nav system isn't a necessity. It's not worth the cost to me.
My next car will have a sunroof though. I think that's a nice add-on.

DVD systems and high-end stereos is a must for me. They make long jounery less boring. However, i not find a dealer to install them as it cost too much

Yes and no. Some cars have very integrated dash and control units. Adding an after-market system can result in a Frankencar look. As for the $2K on in-dash navigation, that $2K often covers additional upgrades like a rear camera system. Yes, it is more expensive coming from the manufacturer, but it is far more smoooooth if you have the money.

Dealer installed DVD systems or high-end stereos are a waste of money. You can install a better after market system for half the cost, even less if you do it yourself.
